Rising equipment costs, tighter capital budgets, and ever-changing project demands are making flexibility more important than ever when acquiring specialized work trucks.
For fleets that need vehicles today without sacrificing flexibility tomorrow, Rental Purchase Options are rewriting the playbook.
An RPO is an agreement that allows companies to build equity while they rent. Unlike traditional lease-to-own structures that impose rigid commitments and forced buyouts, RPOs combine the full flexibility of renting with a clear path toward ownership.
Flexible Rental: Start by renting the vehicle for a specified period. During this time, you can use it for your business needs with no long-term commitment.
Apply Rental Payments Toward Purchase: As you rent, a percent of your monthly payments go toward the vehicle’s pre-agreed upon purchase price. This means that the longer you rent, the more equity you build.
Purchase Option: At any point during the rental, you can choose to execute the purchase option. If you decide not to buy, simply return the vehicle at the end of the term.
For fleets developing a new spec or introducing a new type of vocational truck, evaluating an upfit configuration can be a lot like dating. Everything might look great on paper, but you can’t always tell if it’s the right fit until you spend time together.
Consider a mechanics truck equipped with a crane, air compressor, welder-generator, hose reels, storage drawers, workbench, and lighting. You can spend months perfecting the spec, but the actual test begins when your techs put the finished truck to work.
Is the crane appropriately sized? Is equipment positioned where operators actually need it? Is there enough storage? Were any components overlooked? Would your team change anything before ordering another 10 or 20 units?
An RPO gives you that dating period. You can put the truck through its paces in your operation before deciding whether you want to make the long-term commitment.
If it proves to be the right fit, exercise the purchase option and apply the equity you’ve already built toward ownership. If not…. break up with it.
Sometimes the truck is right, the business need is there, and the only thing that doesn’t line up is the budget cycle.
Many organizations establish annual Capital Expenditure (CapEx) budgets for vehicle and equipment purchases. Once that allocation has been exhausted, purchasing additional trucks has to wait until the next budget cycle.
The problem: the jobs don’t wait. That’s where RPOs come in.
Because rental payments fall under Operating Expense (OpEx) budgets, companies often use RPOs as a workaround to get trucks into service immediately when their CapEx has run dry.
Once that CapEx budget refreshes, they can exercise the purchase option and apply the accumulated rental credits towards the final price.
This creates a bridge between when your operation needs the equipment and when the budget is available to purchase it.
A contractor may win a project that requires additional trucks without knowing exactly how long he will need them, or what demand will look in a year.
An RPO gives companies the ability to put purpose-built equipment into service immediately, build equity while using it, and make the ownership decision once their long-term needs become clear.
Terms (Example): 60% RENTAL CREDIT in months 1-12, 40% RENTAL CREDIT in months 13-24

Our connection to our sister company, City Rent a Truck, is what allows us to combine upfitting with a flexible acquisition model.
Through our Upfit to RPO program, we source the chassis, develop the spec, and complete the build. Once finished, City Rent a Truck provides the RPO terms/contract and handles the purchase option if/when you choose to execute it.
Throughout the process, you’ll work with the same point of contact across both companies, creating a seamless transition.
Whether you’re testing a new upfit, navigating CapEx constraints, or preparing for uncertain project demands, the RPO model offers a versatile solution for your business needs.
